Iron Blood Test Panel - More Information
This panel was designed by Ironology™ Health Solutions:
This iron blood test panel measures the hemoglobin, serum ferritin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin levels through a simple blood test.
The hemoglobin test measures the concentration of hemoglobin in the red cells. Hemoglobin is a chemical compound that gives blood its red color and is responsible for transporting oxygen to cells in the body and is one component of the CBC test.
The serum ferritin test measures the ferritin concentration in the blood. Ferritin is a store of iron in the body and helps evaluate how much iron the body has in reserves. Ferritin levels are low when iron deficiency is present and high when the body has too much iron or is inflamed or infected. Ferritin may also be elevated with certain types of anemias and cancers.
The iron test and TIBC measures the concentration of iron in the blood along with the total iron binding capacity (TIBC). Iron, an essential nutrient in the body, is a key component of hemoglobin. The TIBC level is an indirect measurement of transferrin as the body will usually produce transferrin when iron stores are low and vice versa.
The transferrin test measures the level of transferrin in the blood. Transferrin is a protein made by the liver that is made when the iron stores in the body are low.
To get this iron blood test panel near you, simply order online and get your blood drawn at a local lab. Once your iron blood test results are ready, they will be available for secure download electronically.
